As you can see, MaryAnne was a very active person who traveled to over 25 countries with her husband, but as she grew older, her body naturally slowed down, which is perfectly normal.
But then, this slow, steady slowing became apparent one evening when she was getting up from the dinner table and stumbled and fell on the front of her foot.
Everyone at the moment assumed it was an accident. Every day, people of all ages trip and fall frequently. But before long, this one stumble and fall led to another, and then another.
One day, falling down the steps of her basement while being stuck on the cold, dirty floor for 2 hours until her husband came home.
But shortly after her husband’s death, she took a dangerous decision that many in her family disapproved of. and chose to spend months alone themselves at the Connecticut rural home they had constructed. and the location of their long-ago love affair.
Everyone now made sure her house was as fall-proof as possible due to her recent mishaps. For instance, all of the paths in her home were made clear.
Should the surface exhibit a slick quality similar to her hardwood floors, customized rubber matting was fitted. To give her a sense of stability, rails were also placed in several places.

Once in the hospital, the physicians clarified that her body would have perished from hypothermia if she had remained outside for an additional two to three hours.
Not only did she have a dangerously low body temperature from being out in the open for so long, but she also broke three minor bones in her ankle while looking for river stones in the dried-up creek bed that passed through her property.
That’s the reason her daughter decided she had had enough and got in touch with me at the Punta Gorda Club, where I was employed, stating MaryAnne belonged in Florida.
In fact, it was one of my balance-related videos that led her to my website. In addition, I was sure I could prevent her from falling and take away the dread she experienced on a daily basis because of my experience and more than 11,000 hours spent assisting men and women just like her in getting back into their lives.
I sensed deep down that I needed to approach this issue from a completely different perspective, therefore I wasn’t sure how yet.
She informed me that the only place she felt secure at night was in her bed because of how oppressive her terror was.

That served as a constant reminder to her that time was running out and that, although she detested the thought, she would eventually lose her freedom.
To slow down this growth, she also performed her balancing exercises every day for this reason.
With her broken ankle, though, I realized we were going to have a difficult fight ahead of us because the odds weren’t in her favor. You’ll soon realize that her life was literally in jeopardy at this point…
You see, having worked with hundreds of balance clients face-to-face and having read through all the data and research, I knew that the likelihood of someone over 60 suffering an injury, surgery, or hospital stay would drastically decrease if they had a serious spill that resulted in injuries, surgery, or hospital stays.
And for that reason, regardless of what anyone says, your fear of falling is 100% justified.

The first major error I have observed over the years is the over use of bosu balls, stability balls, and balancing exercises.
You know, people who are in incredible shape can benefit much from these activities and gadgets. However, these exercises and equipment can actually INCREASE your risk of falling if you’ve lost your confidence along with the strength, mobility, and balance in your lower body.
You see, these tools and programs teach your balance to deteriorate over time by loosening the ligaments and tendons in your ankles, if the appropriate path isn’t followed.
Additionally, as you can see, gradually deceive your lower body into believing that there is a Lack of stability. Particularly in your feet. Making it simpler for you to fall or roll your ankle.
Furthermore, they neglect to train the foot’s #1 most crucial nerve, which is in charge of activating the muscles that support your confident gait and keep you from falling to the ground.

Those shoes you are wearing…
Your feet are equipped with thousands of tiny nerves that allow them to detect the surface you are walking on. But these nerves have been disconnected from the earth because we have lived in shoes our entire lives. They are no longer as sharp and responsive. It will therefore be more difficult for them to use your lower leg and foot muscles to catch you when you do inadvertently trip.
Particularly the #1 most significant nerve in your foot, which functions similarly to traction control in the body. detecting any minute variations in the surface and adjusting accordingly to save you from sliding and falling without realizing it.

COMMON MISTAKE
The biggest falsehood that millions of people hold about balance is that older men and women are more likely to fall because of their advanced age.
Fortunately for you, this notion is wholly untrue. I have personally witnessed customers who are in their 90s and beyond regaining their strength, stability, balance, and dexterity as if they were much younger.
You see, becoming older does not automatically translate into a higher risk of falling. It’s a misconception because millions more people would fall every year and tragically die from these injuries if that were true.
In actuality, everything boils down to a single nerve that
has been cut off from decades of losing contact with the
Earth.
You see, this is more than just hearsay…
I found the missing piece to a fallproof life when attending a world-renowned balancing conference in Switzerland recently. Everything was made possible by a Harvard University evolutionary biologist who shared the results of a recent study conducted in Kenya on elderly men and women from tribes that have lived barefoot their entire lives.
They wanted to compare how they moved and how their feet and nerve sense related to the ground compared to those of us over here who had worn shoes almost exclusively from birth.
Due to their enlarged soles, the professor and his team hypothesized that the men and women in Kenya would walk differently and experience more falls as they age because they would have LESS awareness of the ground.
They discovered, though, that even while their feet were 50% more callused than ours, their sense of the ground was 3 times stronger.
Additionally, he discovered that, particularly as they aged, there was virtually no frequency of trips and falls. It’s a major factor in the fact that guys who are in their 60s, 70s, and even 80s are still out hunting with the tribe’s younger men. In contrast, the elderly ladies, regardless of age, would frequently make their way over the rugged terrain to fetch water and harvest their crops.
Everybody was entirely barefoot, and there were no risks of falls or trips.
I was taken aback and felt that my clients back home may benefit from knowing this information. But I had one more thing I needed to know…
Since your feet wouldn’t be used to the shift, simply going barefoot after decades of wearing shoes wasn’t practical and could make you more likely to fall. Furthermore, going everywhere in your bare feet might be taxing on your feet. Moreover, it’s not usually permitted in public.
Fortunately, I had the opportunity to speak with him that evening at the hotel bar because he was alone and having a drink. I then approached and gave my introduction. I expressed my admiration for his presentation to him and mentioned that I just had one question for him. Dr. James, it’s evident that what you mentioned might benefit a lot of people… However, how? Because it wasn’t practical for these men and women over 60 to go around barefoot.
Was there anything I could do, then, to help my clients regain their lives and regain stability, strength, and—above all—the courage to walk without fear?
Yes, Chris, he said. Regretfully, I skipped over that section in my speech. They halved my time with me. Indeed, your clients can benefit from fall prevention just as much as those in my study who lived in Kenya without having to spend years going barefoot.
Chris, all of the little muscles in your foot, ankle, and lower leg that essentially prevent you from falling are fired by the Deep Peroneal Nerve, an inner nerve located in your foot.
While assisting you in staying steady and erect during each stride. We discovered that this foot nerve was always active in the subjects of our investigation.
But in the United States, this nerve often starts to deteriorate in most people after the age of sixty. Which explains the sharp rise in hospital visits, trips, and falls.

After we said our goodbyes, I went straight upstairs to start working on a strategy that MaryAnne could stick to and that would not strain her fractured ankle while still allowing her to improve her gait and make her more resilient, steady, and agile.
And It All Began With This Quick, But Incredibly

As soon as MaryAnne’s boot was taken off and she took a step, we all sat down and, like a gift from heaven, we all burst into contagious smiles.
But the one grinning the most was MaryAnne, who had resumed walking in an instant. And not just little steps, but a complete, powerful walk that exudes confidence and strength.
My hopes were raised, nevertheless, by the sensation she sensed between her feet and the ground.
She said,
“I could feel my toes and foot muscles firing and working. Like they’re stabilizing my entire body.”
From there, we began increasing the amount of times she used this special little ball on her foot.
Then added in some very precise movements to further accelerate her results, which I’ll share with you in a minute. And with each passing day and week she came into the club,
I could see her confidence growing by leaps and bounds.
Until one day she came in with her tennis racket. I asked if she was taking up a new hobby.
She just laughed, smiled and said,
“Chris, I never told you this, but her husband Mike and I used to play tennis all the time. At least three times a week, we would play. Though it makes me happy, I had given up on playing after his passing and my fall. However, unlike many years ago, I now have the confidence to perform without worrying about falling. I also organized a Grand Canyon hiking excursion. In three weeks, my daughter and her spouse and I will be departing. I am quite excited!
I was very excited and hopeful to see MaryAnne’s transformation. Because I discovered something so ridiculously easy that it’s unbelievable that it could work.
But in order to be absolutely certain that this was effective and MaryAnne’s success wasn’t a coincidence, I made the decision to find over 100 men and women over 60 age who scored highly on the fear of falling index, irrespective if they had never experienced one or had in the past, which had led to an injury.
